The garlic festival in Lithovounia

 

Jedes Jahr, Anfang Juli, feiert man im kleinen Dorf Lithovounia in der Nähe von Tripoli das Knoblauchfest. Die Gegend um Tripoli ist aufgrund der günstigen klimatischen Bedingungen und der Höhenlage um 700 Meter besonders geeignet für den Anbau von Knoblauch. Nicht umsonst nennt man die Leute aus der Gegend von Tripoli die "Skordates" (vom griech. Wort "skordo" - Knoblauch).

Every year at the beginning of July in the little village of Lithovounia near Tripoli takes place the big party of garlic. The area around Tripoli because of its climatic conditions and the heigth of about 700 meters above sea level is especially suitable for the cultivation of garlic. Thats why the people of Tripoli are called "skordates" from the greek word for garlic "skordo".

In other villages they put light garlands, in Lithovounia they are made of garlic...
Organisiert wird das Fest vom rührigen Bauernverein Lithovounia. Es gibt einen Wettbewerb, wer den schönsten Knoblauchzopf flicht, und eine kleine Ausstellung über das dörfliche Leben.


The party is organized by the enterprising agricultural association Lithovounia. A little exhibition shows details from the village life and there is a competition for the best pigtail.
Auf dem Dorfplatz werden Tische und 2500 Stühle aufgestellt, und keiner hat etwas dagegen, wenn die Gäste Essen und Getränke von zu Hause mitbringen. Die 30 leckeren Schweine aus dem Backofen finden trotzdem ihre Abnehmer. (Beim Zerhacken vorsichtshalber zurücktreten!)
At the central square they put tables and 2500 chairs and nobody minds if the people bring their own food and beverages from home. The 30 pigs from the oven find anyway their customers. (Step back when they chop the pigs!)
Eine aktive Mannschaft hat für das Fest jede Menge vorbereitet. Es gibt Salate, Käse, natürlich Ouzo und Whisky und kostenlos für alle Skordalia - eine Knoblauchcrème.

The active crew prepared a lot of things - salads, cheese, of course Ouzo and Whisky and free for everybody skordalia - a kind of garlic creme.
Das Fest beginnt mit der Darbietung traditioneller griechischer Tänze, bevor das ganze Dorf die Tanzfläche bevölkert. Und das Ganze geht bei Livemusik mit bekannten Sängern dann meist bis früh um fünf.

The party starts with the performance of traditional greek dances. After nearly everybody is dancing - with live music and well known singers sometimes until five o'clock in the morning.
